More young blood and structured policing are the Kolkata Police’s twin goals after the RG Kar rape and murder tarnished their image among the public.
Sources told News18 that massive restructuring is in the works to reduce miscommunication, misinformation and increase best policing techniques.
On the issue of younger officers, sources said generally sub-inspectors and inspectors are transferred to the post of assistant commissioner of police by which time they attain a certain age that may become a problem in handling law and order.
While sources said there is no denying that the officers are assets in their own right, but to handle law and order on the ground, there is a need to incorporate young IPS officers directly at the ACP level. The plan is to balance both young and experienced officers so that neither investigation nor safety is compromised.
After the RG Kar incident, police also felt the need to strengthen their legal and cyber cells. For this, sources said, Kolkata Police plan to designate legal matters to a senior officer at the IG or DIG level.
Similarly, an IG/DIG-level officer will look after cybercrimes. “We want to lay special emphasis on cybercrime as it’s very important in today’s scenario. The deputy commissioner will look after the nitty-gritties of every police station but the joint CP-level officer will look after broader policy aspects,” a senior officer told News18.
To ensure more accountability, CCTVs of thanas will be connected with apps that will be installed in the phone of every officer in-charge to monitor the happenings in the police station.
For now, Kolkata Police seem to be in crisis-management mode.
