Indian challenger D Gukesh picked up a crucial win over Chinese champion Ding Liren in Game 11 of the World Chess Championship Final 2024 to inch ahead in the summit clash.

Gukesh opened with his knight before Liren opted for an opening using his pawns.
Liren fell behind the time early in the game as he pondered long and hard over his fourth move of the game, put pushed Gukesh into scenarios which required the Indian GM to stay level-headed while taking stock of the situation and Liren’s plan, which ate into the teenager’s clock midway through the game.
Gukesh, who fortified his King early in the game as he decided to castle, held his own until the moment Liren erred as the teenager pounced on the chance late in the game.
Liren, who has made a habit of clawing his way back from tricky situations throughout the extent of the championship clash so far, couldn’t dig out yet another miracle as Gukesh punished the 32-year-old for a blunder deep into the game.
With the win, Gukesh has managed to turn the tables on the champion, who took the lead against the odds early in the series with his win over the in-form Indian in the curtain-riser in Singapore. He maintained his lead in the second game as he played out a draw using white pieces before Gukesh restored parity to the championship encounter with a win in Game 3.

Games 4 through 10 ended in a draw with both players bagging a share of the spoils to keep adding increments of 0.5 each to their score.
However, Gukesh broke the mould with his win in game eleven of the clash for the coveted title with his win on Sunday and remains just ahead of the Chinese champion in the final stretch of this entertaining clash between the holder and his challenger.
