PM Modi warned against people who cause disharmony and violence in society while referring to the Magdeburg Christmas Market terror attack.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned that there are forces in society that want to disrupt social harmony while mourning the victims of the terror attack at a Christmas market in Germany’s Magdeburg.
“The teachings of Lord Christ celebrate love, harmony and brotherhood. It is important that we work to make this spirit stronger. But it pains my heart when there are attempts to spread violence and cause disruption in society,” PM Modi said.
“Just a few days ago, we saw what happened at the Christmas market in Germany,” he said, while addressing the attendees at the Catholic Bishops Conference of India.
Four women and a nine-year-old boy were killed and over 235 people were injured when a man drove into a Christmas market teeming with holiday shoppers in Magdeburg.
The suspect, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, is under investigation on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and bodily harm. In a closed-door hearing on Saturday evening, a judge ordered that he be kept in custody pending a possible indictment.
The Indian embassy in Berlin said it is in touch with the seven Indian citizens who sustained injuries in the attack and said three of them have been discharged.
PM Modi also told the attendees that he went to Sri Lanka to pay homage to the victims of the 2019 Easter bombings in Sri Lanka which were a series of coordinated suicide attacks on churches and hotels, killing over 250 people and injuring hundreds.
The attacks, claimed by Islamist extremist group National Thowheeth Jama’ath, targeted Easter Sunday services and popular tourist spots.
