Lord Shri Ram’s sister, Shanta, plays a significant role in mythology. The locals believe that anyone who is struggling to get married or have children will have their wishes fulfilled at the temple
Very few people are aware of Lord Shri Ram’s sister Shanta, yet her significance in mythology is noteworthy. It is believed that her Tapasthali is located in Shringi Nari Dham, within the Parshurampur block of the Basti district of Uttar Pradesh where her statue stands alongside that of Rishi Shringi.
As per mythological tales, Rishi Shringi, who is considered to be the son of Rishi Vibhandak, had organized the Putra Kameshti Yagya to fulfill King Dasharath’s desire for a child. This yagya was performed at Makhauda Dham, situated about 39km east of Ayodhya.
The temple priest told News18 that as per lore when King Dasharath requested Rishi Shringi to perform the yagya, the rishi decided to conduct it at Makhauda Dham. However, the yagya would have been incomplete with an unmarried rishi, which is why King Dasharath married his daughter Shanta to Rishi Shringi.
After the marriage, the Putra Kameshti Yagya was completed. Subsequently, Mata Shanta and Rishi Shringi returned to their ashram, Shringi Nari, after spending a few days at Makhauda Dham.
The Budhwa Mangal fair takes place on the last Tuesday of the month of Ashadh in Shringi Nari.
On this day, puri and halwa are offered to the goddess. It is believed that in Treta Yuga, the Putra Kameshti Yagya was concluded at Makhauda Dham, after which King Dasharath was blessed with four sons, including Shri Ram. During this yagya, Mata Shanta worshipped Goddess Shakti for 45 days.
It is said that after the yagya, Rishi Shringi attempted to take Shanta with him, but she chose to stay and merged into the present temple in the form of pindi.
The locals believe that anyone who is struggling to get married or have children will have their wishes fulfilled by worshipping here. Devotees from all districts of Uttar Pradesh, as well as locals, visit daily. Additionally, people from across the country, including Bihar, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan, come for darshan and worship.
