Scholarship Programs Available at the University of Chicago
The University offers a variety of scholarships to support its students. Here are some of the key programs:
University Merit Scholarship: Exceptional students are selected to receive the University Merit Scholarship based on outstanding academic performance, extracurricular involvement, demonstrated leadership, and community engagement. These merit-based awards are decided by a committee during the admission process and are not influenced by financial need. The scholarship amounts vary, but students can expect to receive at least $2,000. All first-year applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships, so no additional application is required. However, transfer students are not eligible for merit-based scholarships.
First Phoenix Scholarship: All first-generation college students who qualify for need-based financial aid are guaranteed free tuition under the First Phoenix Scholarship program. First-generation students who do not qualify for need-based aid will receive a $20,000 scholarship distributed over four years. To be eligible, students must be the first in their families to attend a four-year college or university.
Note: A first-generation college student is defined as one whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not earn a bachelor’s degree in the US.
National Police and Fire Scholarship: To honor the public safety officers of the US, the University of Chicago offers the Police and Fire Scholarship Program. This program provides full-tuition, four-year scholarships to select children of active-duty, injured, or deceased municipal, county, or state police officers and firefighters. High school seniors who qualify for admission to the university and are children of sworn, professional police officers or firefighters are eligible to apply. This includes officers in sheriff’s offices and professional firefighters working for municipal or county fire departments.
Odyssey Scholarship: Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor known as “Homer” and additional contributions from alumni and university supporters, the Odyssey Scholarship Program has, for over 15 years, provided financial, academic, and social support to students from lower-income families or who are the first in their families to attend college. Odyssey Scholars are selected based on financial need and family circumstances and are eligible for additional funding for study abroad, health insurance, and other academic-related expenses. To be considered for the Odyssey Scholarship, students must apply for need-based financial aid.
