NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and Nationalist Congress Party has called out the Uttar Pradesh government for its recent decision for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route.
RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary asked the UP government to retract its order requiring eateries along the Kanwar route to display the names of their owners.Chaudhary said that the Kanwar pilgrimage is not tied to any specific religion or caste.
“It doesn’t appear to be a well thought out and well-reasoned decision,” Chaudhary told news agency ANI.
“There is still time. It (roll back) should happen or the government should not put much emphasis on (implementing) it,” he added.
He further stated, “All those who go on Kanwar yatra and people who serve them, all are the same. This tradition has been there from the starting and no one saw who was serving them.”
Another BJP ally, NCP leader Praful Patel also called out the order and said that “UP government needs to take it back” as it “needs amendment”.
“These steps have been taken for the first time in view of the Kanwar Yatra. It needs amendment. The UP government needs to take it back,” said Patel after attending the all-party meeting.
The UP government gave a directive to various establishments, including restaurants, roadside eateries, fruit vendors, and tea stalls situated along the Kanwar yatra route, to prominently display nameplates that provide information about the proprietors. The state government also declared that it will initiate action against individuals or businesses involved in the sale of products bearing Halal certification.
This order has drawn criticism from other BJP allies as well including Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), union minister Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).
