Recent polls show a tight race between Trump and Harris ahead of the debate, with Trump holding a slight lead

Former US President and Republican candidate Donald Trump stated during his televised debate with Kamala Harris on Tuesday that his Democratic rival had no economic plans of her own and had merely copied President Joe Biden’s policies.

“She doesn’t have a plan. She copied Biden’s plan, and it’s like four sentences… four sentences that are just, ‘Oh, we’ll try and lower taxes.’ She doesn’t have a plan,” Trump said during the prime-time showdown on ABC.

The nationally televised debate began at 9 p.m. ET and took place just eight weeks before the November 5 election, with early voting starting in some states in the coming days.

The 90-minute debate, hosted by ABC News, was held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It marked the first meeting between the two candidates and followed weeks of personal attacks on Harris by Trump and his allies.

After Joe Biden’s exit from the presidential race, Trump, 78, had to adapt to Harris, 59, who is the first woman, Black person, and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. Trump focused on high levels of inflation and immigration during Biden’s presidency, though both issues have seen significant improvement this year.

Presidential debates do not necessarily change voters’ minds, but they can alter the dynamics of a race. Biden’s poor performance against Trump in June contributed to his decision to abandon his campaign.
