The central government has earned a whopping Rs 2,364 crore by selling scrap in the past four years, a feat that has been commended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as one signifying “economic prudence”.
News18 has a copy of the presentation made recently to the Prime Minister in which it was mentioned how Rs 2,364 crore has been earned by weeding out close to 131.4 lakh physical files and other obsolete items, which were occupying space in government offices. Around 643.8 lakh square feet of space has been freed in government offices as a result, the PM was told.
PM Modi, in a post on X, wrote: “Commendable! By focussing on efficient management and proactive action, this effort has attained great results. It shows how collective efforts can lead to sustainable results, promoting both cleanliness and economic prudence.”
The government earned the maximum revenue in the cleanliness campaign run for almost a month this year, with Rs 650 crore coming into the government coffers and over 25 lakh physical files being weeded out.
The drive this year covered all states, UTs, and overseas missions and posts, including railway stations, post offices, banks, airports, ports, coalfields, and mines. Far-off locations such as the Nubra Valley, Dhanbad, Kandla, Lepa Road, Nicobar Islands and Birbhum were covered.

The present campaign was more than 97 times the extent of the first campaign four years ago in terms of the number of cleanliness sites. Over 2.9 lakh schools, over one lakh post offices, over 56,000 railway properties and nearly 39,000 defence premises were part of the same this time.
Similarly, the revenue earned this time was eight times more than in the first campaign as it stood at Rs 650 crore this time.
The government had earned Rs 82 crore in the first campaign four years ago, Rs 373 crore in the second campaign, and Rs 556 crore in the third campaign.
The space freed in the just-concluded campaign is also 16 times more than the first campaign, the presentation shows. While 12 lakh square feet was freed in the first campaign, nearly 190 lakh square feet was freed this time.
