Chelsea’s captain, Reece James has been struggling with injuries and a move outside of England could be a possibility to see a change of fortunes.
Chelsea captain and England international, Reece James could be on the lookout for a new club as his agents are already testing the waters regarding a possible move in the near future.
The 24-year-old right back who is one of England’s finest at the position, has been struggling to get himself back on the pitch due to his recurring injury issues. James last played for Chelsea in the 2023-24 season and is yet to make an appearance under the Enzo Maresca era.
According to a report by FootballTransfers, FC Barcelona and Benfica have been approached by James’ representatives for a possible switch. The reason behind a move is that playing in warmer conditions like that in Portugal or Spain could be a solution to see James back on the pitch.
‘Physios have advised that the warmer climes of southern Europe, particularly Spain or Portugal, could significantly aid James’ recovery and long-term fitness,” the report claims.
James is expected to return to full training with the London-based club next week however, his return on the pitch remains uncertain at the moment.
The English international came through the Cobham academy with the likes of Mason Mount and played a key role in Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League-winning campaign in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel. Since then he has been touted to be the next big star in the full-back position after Kyle Walker, but his injuries have been a massive setback in his career.
Both Barcelona and Benfica could do with a solid right-back option on the bench. The La Liga giants who had the likes of Joao Cancelo and Jules Kounde last season, are stretched thin since the former’s loan deal expired. Benfica also could benefit from added options for the position.
Chelsea will return to action in the Premier League where they take on Arne Slot’s Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, October 20 after the international break. The five-time Premier League champions have shown positive signs under Maresca and are currently fourth on the league table with 14 points in the seven games played so far.
