RAIPUR: Ramen Deka, 70, a former lok sabha member from Assam and BJP national secretary, will be the new governor of Chhattisgarh.
He succeeded incumbent governor Bishwabhushan Harichandan, who was appointed as the governor of Chhattisgarh in February 2023.
Deka, who has also served as the BJP Assam state president, is likely to take the oath of office on August 23. President Droupadi Murmu appointed new governors for ten states, including Chhattisgarh, late Saturday evening.
The septuagenarian Ramen Deka was born on March 1, 1954, in Assam and has been active in politics since 1980. He has been elected Member of Parliament in the Lower House of Parliament twice on BJP tickets. He was elected from the Mangaldoi constituency in the 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections, respectively.
The BJP veteran was also a member of the panel of chairpersons in the Lok Sabha. Additionally, he was a member of the Advisory Committee and the Central Advisory Committee of the Prime Minister’s Model Village Scheme. He was also a member of the ministry of external Affairs and the ministry of overseas Indian affairs. In 2006, Deka served as the president of the Assam BJP.
Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Raj Bhawan sources said that an official notification regarding the oath ceremony of the new governor was yet to be released.
