Producer Ratan Jain recalls challenges while making Twinkle Khanna and Shah Rukh Khan starrer Baadshah with limited technology: ‘ If there was VFX in those times…’ |
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ratan Jain revealed that Karisma Kapoor was initially considered for the lead female role in Baadshah. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, she couldn’t participate. After exploring other options, the role was eventually secured by Twinkle Khanna.
In Baadshah, Shah Rukh Khan played a private detective equipped with innovative gadgets like sticky shoes for climbing buildings. At that time, advanced VFX technology was limited, so the film had to rely on practical effects. Jain reflected on the challenges, noting that while some effects were less than ideal, the lack of sophisticated VFX meant the team had to make do with what was available, hinting that better results could have been achieved with modern technology.
Ratan also shared that the film’s second half underwent significant changes to adopt a more serious tone. Initially, the script had a different direction, but it was revised to shift from the comic tone of the first half to a more serious narrative in the latter part of the film.
Though Baadshah is now cherished as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s fan favorites, it initially struggled at the box office. Marketed as an action film by Abbas-Mustan, the movie surprised audiences with its comedy thriller twist, leading to disappointment among those expecting intense action. However, it eventually gained a loyal fan base and cult status after its TV debut.
