There is no thought at the Centre about imposing President’s Rule in West Bengal, sources in the government have said. This comes after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), in a meeting in Palakkad earlier this month, also said it was not in favour of President’s Rule in the state as such action destabilises an elected government.

Bengal’s capital Kolkata has been rocked by protests for over a month now after the horrific rape and murder case in RG Kar hospital, with doctors and general public up in arms. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee also offered to resign last week, saying she would do so if it helped douse the protests.

On Manipur, sources said the latest trouble was triggered by a decision to change Assam Rifles deployed in the state with the CRPF, as this upset the Kuki community. After talks over three days now, one battalion of Assam Rifles has moved out of Manipur and another one will move out in the next few days. The situation in Manipur is under control, a source said.

Regarding the terror attacks seen in Jammu, a source said the topography of the region posed some initial challenges but now, security installations in the area had been completed and training in arms had been given to nearly 30,000 ‘well-intentioned’ villagers as well. The situation in the last month had come under control in Jammu, the source said. Terrorists had earlier focussed on Kashmir Valley and now shifted activities to Jammu, but the government was geared up, they added.
