Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who delivered his 11th Independence Day speech from the Red Fort on Thursday, batted for a secular civil code, calling it the “only way” to end discrimination.

“It is need of hour to have a secular civil code and do away with discriminatory communal civil code,” the prime minister said in his address to the nation.

PM Modi’s statement comes in the backdrop of the Centre’s consistent focus on implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with Home Minister Amit Shah calling it the prime minister’s guarantee.
