Odisha school children to receive over Rs 21 crore as ‘conveyance allowance’ in 2024-25 academic session

BHUBANESWAR: As many as 35,076 school children in Odisha will receive an amount of more than Rs 21 crore towards transport and escort allowance during the academic session 2024-25. The Project Approval Board (PAB) of the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education has approved this.
This allowance is given to students who travel more than 1km to attend classes in their respective schools.Students of government and government-aided primary, upper primary, and secondary schools from remote areas are eligible to receive this benefit, said the official sources.
According to a government notification, a student with a minimum attendance of 75 percent or above can receive Rs 600 per month as a transport allowance. Similarly, Rs 400 per month will be given to students with 50 percent to 74 percent attendance, and Rs 300 to students with 30 percent to 50 percent attendance.
However, students with less than 30 percent attendance will not receive this allowance. The allowance amount will be directly sent to the bank accounts of the students or their parents.
In a recent letter to all District Education Officers (DEOs), authorities of the Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) have asked the officials to disburse the allowance and submit the utilization certificates.
According to the official data, 21,469 primary school students, 11,943 upper primary students, and 1,664 secondary school students from all 30 districts of the state will receive the transport and escort allowance for this year.
The highest amount will be disbursed to students of Ganjam district. As many as 4,577 students from this district will receive Rs 2.74 crore. As per the approval, Kendrapada district will not receive any allowance because students do not travel more than 1km to reach their schools. Districts like Balasore, Khurda, Puri, and Jajpur have a smaller number of students who are eligible to receive this allowance.
