NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Education has announced the NIRF Rankings 2024, listing the top colleges in India. Each year, this ranking highlights the leading institutions across various categories in the country. In the NIRF 2024 Rankings, St. Xavier’s College Kolkata has achieved the 6th position, trailing other top-ranked colleges in the country such as Hindu College, Miranda House, St.Stephen’s College, and Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) from the Delhi University.

St. Xavier’s College Kolkata: NIRF 2024 vs. NIRF 2023

In the NIRF 2023 Rankings, St. Xavier’s College Kolkata secured the 5th position. The college’s scores across various parameters were 66.57 in Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR), 58.77 in Research and Professional Practice (RPC), 88.48 in Graduation Outcomes (GO), 57.98 in Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and 74.26 in Perception (PR). These scores reflect the college’s strengths in areas like graduation rates and public perception.
This year in the NIRF 2024 Rankings, St. Xavier’s College dropped to 6th place overall. However, there were notable improvements in specific areas. The college’s TLR score slightly increased to 66.78, indicating continued commitment to quality teaching and learning resources. The most significant progress was in Research and Professional Practice (RPC), where the score jumped to 67.75, suggesting enhanced research output and academic contributions. The Perception (PR) score also rose to 74.99, reflecting a stronger reputation among peers and stakeholders. Although there was a slight decline in the Graduation Outcomes (GO) and Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) scores, the overall trend points to focused improvements in key areas, especially in research and institutional reputation.

The St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, was established in 1860 by the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Named after St. Francis Xavier, a missionary and co-founder of the Jesuit order, the college has been a significant educational institution in India, known for its emphasis on holistic education and social service.
In its early years, St. Xavier’s College was affiliated with the University of Calcutta, which was founded in 1857. Over the decades, St. Xavier’s College grew in reputation and academic excellence, eventually earning recognition as one of India’s premier institutions.

How to secure admission to St. Xavier’s College Kolkata

To be eligible for admission to St. Xavier’s College Kolkata, candidates must have completed their previous qualifying examination within the last five years. The year of admission is not considered in this calculation, meaning that a lapse of more than five years from the year of passing the previous examination disqualifies the candidate from admission.
For all courses, except Bengali Honours, students must have studied and passed English at the +2 level. If a student fails in English or did not study it, their admission will be canceled, with the exception of foreign students, who are subject to a separate set of rules.
UG Honours, General Courses and Integrated Masters Courses
Admission to undergraduate honours, general courses, and integrated master’s programs at St. Xavier’s College requires candidates to meet specific eligibility criteria. The aggregate for admission is calculated using four subjects from the +2 level, including compulsory subjects specified in the eligibility criteria, along with the subjects where the student has scored the highest marks.
Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria set for each course, ensuring that they have passed all subjects as per the respective board or council’s pass marks. Additionally, students must secure at least 45% marks in each of the four subjects considered in the aggregate calculation. Furthermore, candidates must achieve the required marks in individual subjects as detailed in the “Requirement for Application.”
When applying, students must enter marks for all subjects listed on their +2 level marksheet. For those who have passed the GCE examination in the UK, eligibility is granted only if they have passed with two ‘A’ Levels and three ‘O’ Levels, with ‘A’ Level subjects considered compulsory based on course-specific eligibility criteria. Candidates must have completed and passed the ‘A’ Level examination at the time of application, as projected marksheets are not accepted.
Foreign nationals who did not receive their education in English must provide an English Proficiency certificate, such as TOEFL or IELTS. Without these certificates, they are not eligible to apply.
