Newark Liberty Airport struggles with FAA radar problems, flights delayed
“FAA equipment outages have led to flight disruptions at #EWR Airport. Please check with your airline for the latest updates on your flight status,” the airport posted on X.
The outage, affecting radar-related equipment, resulted in delays of up to 147 minutes.
The issue began around 2:30 pm (local time) on Monday, prompting a temporary ground stop. According to the FAA, ground delays are expected to persist until 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. However, the FAA confirmed that the ground stop has been lifted, and flights are now arriving and departing as scheduled.
In a statement reported by Eyewitness News, the FAA said:
“The FAA briefly slowed flights into Newark Liberty International Airport this afternoon due to a radar issue. Normal operations have resumed. For updates, please visit fly.faa.gov.”
FlightAware data indicates that Newark Liberty International has experienced 334 delays and 26 cancellations, impacting both domestic and international flights.
The airport has apologized for the inconvenience and urges passengers to consult their airlines for flight status updates. This disruption has created challenges for travelers, particularly those trying to return home for work.
Chris Kall, a passenger arriving at Newark, told News12 Brooklyn, “They initially told us we would land by 5:15, but we didn’t actually touch down until 6. This delay is causing problems for those of us with connecting flights.”
