On Monday, Maurya was present alongside CM Yogi in the UP assembly but that was also borne out of protocol.

Keshav Prasad Maurya said this at an OBC meet of the party and left the event before Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath arrived there, adding fuel to reports of a rift between the two.

Stirring the political pot in Uttar Pradesh yet again, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Monday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won in the state in 2014 and 2017 when it did not have a government there but suffered a setback in 2024 out of over-confidence when the party had a government. Maurya said this at an OBC meet of the party and left the event before Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath arrived there, adding fuel to reports of a rift between the two.

“Elections are not won on strength of government, they are won on the strength of the party. Elections are always contested by a party and won by the party. Was there our government there in 2014 or 2017 when we won? But in 2024, we were overconfident and thought we would win as we had a government…elections are not won on basis of government. It is always the party that contests and wins polls,” Maurya said.

He said the BJP would come back stronger in 2027 assembly elections. Earlier this month, Maurya had apparently attacked his own government by saying that the party organisation was bigger than any government and that he was a party worker first and then a Deputy CM. Maurya also met senior BJP leaders in Delhi in the aftermath of the BJP’s losses in UP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Earlier on Monday, Maurya was present alongside the CM in the state assembly but that was also borne out of protocol. Maurya has skipped many cabinet meetings chaired by the CM earlier, triggering talk of a tussle between them.
