Manewada Besa road residents manhandled PWD officials over flood in Nagpur | Nagpur News
NAGPUR: An enraged mob of approximately 500 residents assaulted senior state public works department officials on Manewada Besa road on Saturday morning after torrential rainwater inundated thousands of houses in the vicinity.
A substantial contingent of the Quick Response Team (QRT) and city police personnel was deployed to maintain law and order in the affected area.
Former corporator Mangala Kekre of Prabhag number 34 informed The Times of India (TOI) that the ongoing construction of the cement concrete road wreaked havoc as rainwater entered homes in areas such as Kalyaneshwar Nagar, Geeta Nagar, Seva Nagar, and Barkeshwar Nagar for the first time in three decades.
“Since the state PWD commenced the cement road works 8 months ago, I have been persistently urging them to ensure proper stormwater networks. However, they disregarded my concerns,” she stated.
Moreover, the elevation of the Manewada Besa road increased by nearly three feet, resulting in the inundation of localities situated on either side of the bustling thoroughfare, the former BJP corporator acknowledged.
The early morning heavy downpour exacerbated the situation, and with the incomplete stormwater network, water began entering houses in at least 20 areas, Kekre mentioned.
As the water level rose and started infiltrating houses, residents congregated on the busy Manewada Besa road around 7 am and demanded that senior PWD officials inspect the affected areas. The irate residents and former BJP corporator summoned State PWD officials. According to the ex-BJP corporator, the residents also physically assaulted two female PWD officers, including Manisha Dhok and Shankar Pure.
Upon being notified, a substantial force of police personnel and the Quick Response Team arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. “Presently, the situation in this part of the city is completely under control,” affirmed Kiran Kumar Kabadi.
