Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt is expected to complete his move to Manchester United this summer. The Premier League giants recently confirmed the appointment of Dan Ashworth as the new sporting director of the club. A report published by Mirror claims that Ashworth’s first job is to secure the signing of De Ligt, who could manage to make 16 Bundesliga starts for Bayern Munich last season.

Famed football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano recently shared an update on De Ligt’s transfer situation and claimed that Manchester United “are the only club with green light” from the Dutch international to “advance” in negotiations.

“Understand Manchester United are the only club with green light from Matthijs de Ligt to proceed and advance in talks, as things stand. No talks ongoing between agent and PSG as de Ligt’s giving priority to Man United. United, negotiating with Bayern on fee/deal structure,” read the post shared by Romano on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier, Romano had pointed out that Matthijs de Ligt had “given green light” to Manchester United’s transfer move. “Matthijs de Ligt has given green light to Manchester United move after direct contacts with his camp. Personal terms are not an issue as his agent Pimenta is only negotiating with Man United, priority for the player. Up to Man Utd and Bayern, in talks over deal structure,” Romano had posted.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag had previously worked with Matthijs de Ligt at Dutch football club Ajax. Mirror report claims that Ten Hag wishes to reunite with De Ligt at Old Trafford. The report went on to suggest that Manchester United are planning to offer a five-year contract to De Ligt to start his career in the Premier League.

Manchester United are understood to be determined to rope in Matthijs de Ligt after Everton, reportedly, did not wish to lower their £70 million asking price for English defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Matthijs de Ligt currently has three years left on his contract with Bayern Munich. The 24-year-old center-back has so far represented the Bavarian giants in 73 matches. In international football, he has till now represented the Netherlands in 45 matches.

Matthijs de Ligt did not take part in the Netherlands’ Round of 16 fixture against Romania at the Euro 2024. The Dutch side got the better of Romania by three goals to nil to reach the quarterfinals.
