CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Monday presented social welfare department’s best transgender award for 2014 to Sandya Devi of Kanyakumari.
The award recognises transgender people who inspire others and actively participate in social causes. It carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
Sandya Devi, a flower vendor in Thovalai in Kanyakumari, has performed more than 1,000 villu paattu (bow-song) programmes, creating awareness on Covid-19, dowry harassments and violence against women.She gave villu paattu training to several transgender people.
She has adopted an eight-year-old boy with learning difficulties and borne the entire educational expense of another boy.
