Donning an orange safety vest on Wednesday, Donald Trump held a press conference from the passenger seat of a garbage truck in response to comments made by Joe Biden, who called out the supporters of the Republican nominee a week ahead of the presidential election.
“Kamala and Joe call us all garbage. I call you the heart and soul of America,” Trump said later during a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin. “My supporters are of higher quality than crooked Joe and lying Kamala.” This political spectacle came just a day after Biden’s remarks at a fundraising event, where he attempted to call out racist comments made by a speaker at a Trump rally, but ended up drawing widespread backlash over his remarks targeting Republicans.

How ‘Garbage’ Row Started
The controversy began on Sunday when comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, speaking at a Trump rally, referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” and made disparaging comments about various groups, including Black Americans and Latinos. In response, Biden addressed the remarks during a Zoom call with Voto Latino, saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters’ — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American.”
Biden’s choice of words quickly drew ire from Trump and other Republicans, who interpreted the statement as an attack on Trump supporters as a whole. Trump’s campaign promptly distanced itself from Hinchcliffe’s comments but seized the opportunity to criticise Biden. In a rally later that week, Trump claimed Biden’s remarks revealed a deeper disdain for his supporters, stating, “Joe Biden finally said what he and Kamala really think of our supporters. He called them ‘garbage.’”
Biden Defends Himself
Amid this growing narrative, Biden attempted to clarify his statement, asserting that he was referring to Hinchcliffe’s remarks. “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporters at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” the US President said in a post on X.

Despite Biden’s clarification, the damage was done. The comment overshadowed other campaign messages, distracting from Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s push for unity just days before the Nov. 5 election. Harris reiterated her commitment to serving “all Americans.” As the media coverage of the incident intensified, Trump’s press conference from the garbage truck served as a counter to Biden’s remarks.
With the election looming, both parties face increasing pressure to navigate the fallout from this “garbage” row. Polls show a razor-thin margin between Biden and Trump, underscoring the critical need for both campaigns to manage their messaging effectively in the final days before voters head to the polls.
