ISL 2024-25: Mohun Bagan SG defeated Mohammedan SC 3-0 (FSDL)

Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 in the 2024-25 Indian Super League.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant trumped Mohammedan SC 3-0 in the 2024-25 Indian Super League at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday.

Greg Stewart assisted Jamie Maclaren, Subhasish Bose and then scored himself as Mohun Bagan reigned supreme in the first Kolkata derby of the season.

The Mariners rocked the boat in the initial exchanges with Apiua’s shot from outside the box swerved and swung in the air only for Padam Chhetri to palm it away. Mohammedan were bombarded with attacks thereafter as Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 8th minute itself.

Greg Stewart’s dink into the box was headed behind for a corner. Liston Colaco walked over for the set piece and sent in a vicious curling ball which was glanced behind by Greg. Jamie Maclaren, in his first start for the club, instinctively ducked into a powerful header as the ball thudded into the back of the net.

After conceding an early goal, Mohammedan’s enthusiasm seemed to have waned.

Carlos Franca went into the referee’s book in the 19th minute as fellow South American Alexis Gomez followed his teammate come the 24th. Both for unnecessary challenges.

Their intensity was back up and they looked to press Mohun Bagan but that only led to more spaces opening up in mid-field as well as in behind the defence.

In the 31st minute, Joseph Adjei and Subhasish Bose clashed for a loose ball on the left flank. The referee flashed his yellow card and offered a free-kick to the home side.

Greg took charge and sent in a curling ball into the box as Subhasish jumped and powered his header through the Mohammedan keeper to double Mohun Bagan’s lead.

It was Greg Stewart’s turn to score in the 36th minute as he jogged his way into the penalty box, sent the defender the wrong way with a hint of his hips and slotted the ball into the bottom corner with relative ease.

Even though Mohun Bagan had a few chances to score more, the half-time whistle came as a relief for Andrey Chernyshov.

At the restart, Mohammedan’s coach rang in the changes as he brought on Bipin Singh, Lalrinfela and Cesar Manzoki.

Manvir and Liston had the shots from outside the penalty box somehow saved as Mohammedan relied on counters.

The Indian wingers combined in the 63rd and could have added Mohun Bagan’s fourth on the night but Zodingliana Ralte made a brave block.

Manvir had another golden chance to put his name on the scoresheet in the 70th minute. A long punt forward from Asish Rai found Manvir in acres of space down the right wing. He ran a long way only to have his effort saved by keeper Padam.

Liston then tried his luck from distance after a fast break when he spotted the keeper off his line but Padam recovered in time to make the Goan look almost foolish to have tried.

Jose Molina opted to make some changes as he brought on Dimitri Petratos and Suhail Bhat, followed by Ashique Kuruniyan and Deepak Tangri.

The rest of the game descended into a hapless exercise of biding time as despite multiple shots and attempts, neither team could score. The Mariners sailed through with the win thanks to goals in the first half.
