Is Mason Greenwood on the Verge of Leaving Manchester United? Here’s What We Know
Mason Greenwood seems all set to leave Manchester United this summer. The Red Devils have reportedly reached an agreement with French club Marseille. The final call, however, will be taken by Greenwood. He has not played any match for Manchester United since 2021 and he was suspended by the club following charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. If Marseille get a green signal from the footballer, they will pay Manchester United € 31.6 million (£26.7m) including a fixed transfer fee and add-ons, according to a report by The Athletic. The Premier League club will also receive a large share of any future sale of the English international.
The outlet earlier reported that Mason Greenwood paid a visit to the Carrington Training Complex on July 8 when Manchester United kicked off their pre-season training. The youngster, however, did not take part in the practice session. Instead, he met the club’s football leadership team and had a brief discussion regarding his future.
Mason Greenwood was loaned out to Getafe last season. During his time at the Spanish club, Greenwood put up some impressive performances, registering 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances across competitions. Thanks to his consistency, Greenwood, reportedly, came on the radar of several top clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Napoli and Benfica.
Besides Marseille, Italian outfit Lazio was also keen on signing Mason Greenwood during the summer transfer window, as per The Athletic. They reportedly submitted a bid for the 22-year-old but Marseille looks close to winning the race. If Greenwood joins the League 1 giants, he will play under former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who took over the helm at Marseille in June.
Criminal charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February last year. It has now been learnt that the mayor of Marseille urged the city’s football club not to rope in Greenwood. As per BBC, mayor Benoit Payan told French radio station RMC that he would ask the Marseille president Pablo Longoria not to sign the 22-year-old. “I do not want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable,” Payan said, as per BBC.
Manchester United had signed Mason Greenwood in 2018. During his stint at Old Trafford, Greenwood featured in 129 matches and has netted 35 goals.
