India Exported Non-basmati White Rice Worth USD 122 Million In April-May: Report

According to reports, in April-May, 1,24,218.36 metric tonnes of non-basmati rice was sent by India to Maldives.

In a recent update, it has come to light that India has exported non-basmati white rice worth a total of USD 122 million in the month of April-May of the current financial year. The government closely monitored the production, availability along with the export scenario to assess suitable policy intervention. Jitin Prasad, the Minister of the state for commerce and Industry, claimed this in a written account in the Lok Sabha. According to the data provided by the Union Minister, India has exported non-basmati rice worth USD 852.53 million between the financial Year 2023-24. It was USD 2 billion and USD 2.2 billion in the financial year 2021-22 and 2022-23 respectively.

He further said that the export of non-basmati rice is debarred from July 20, 2023. Export of non-basmati rice is allowed based on the permission granted by the government of India to other countries in order to meet their food security needs. Prasad also claimed that the export of non-basmati white rice has been allowed to different countries.

According to reports, in April-May, 1,24,218.36 metric tonnes of non-basmati rice was sent by India to Maldives. This is the highest compared to the export of rice to any other country in the months under review. Apart from this, 14,000 metric tonnes of non-basmati rice have been exported to Mauritius, 1,000 metric tonnes to Malawi, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

In the year 2023-24, the country exported the product to 17 countries. This included 79,000 metric tonnes to Bhutan, 14,000 metric tonnes to Mauritius, 50,000 metric tonnes to Singapore, 75,000 metric tonnes to UAE, 95,000 metric tonnes to Nepal, 1,90,000 metric tonnes to Cameroon, 1,42,000 metric tonnes to Cote d’Ivoire, 1,42,000 metric tonnes to Guinea, and 1,70,000 metric tonnes to Malaysia.

Apart from this, non-basmati rice was exported to other countries like Philippines 2,95,000 metric tonnes, Seychelles 800 metric tonnes, Comoros 20,000 metric tonnes, Madagascar 50,000 metric tonnes, Equatorial Guinea 10,000 metric tonnes, Egypt 60,000 metric tonnes, Kenya 1,00,000 metric tonnes and Tanzania 30,000 metric tonnes.
