In First Call After Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder, Hospital Official Informed Family She Died By Suicide: Report

The assistant superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was the first to call and inform the deceased’s family from the hospital, has been summoned by the police to Lalbazar on Tuesday.  The family of the deceased stated that they were initially told by him that their daughter had committed suicide. a report by Anandabazaar Patrika mentioned.

However, it was later discovered to be a murder. Subsequently, the theory of rape came to light, prompting the police to file a case of both rape and murder and begin an investigation.

From the outset, there were questions about why the death was initially described as a suicide. On Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the deceased’s family and received similar complaints. She later announced that they would investigate who first made the claim of suicide, and the police will question that person as well.

Police have also recorded the statement of seven junior doctors, out of whom four people had dinner with the victim that night. The victim had reportedly watched Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw as a part of the Paris Olympics, before having dinner at 2:30 am that night with four of her colleagues. She then headed to the seminar hall to take rest.

The autopsy reports of the victim revealed that cut marks were found on the victim’s hands and face. The reports also indicated that a brutal blow caused shards of glass from her spectacles to break and enter her eyes. Injuries to the head were also reported, as the accused slammed the deceased’s head against the wall.

A semi-nude body of a woman PGT doctor, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday. She was on duty on Thursday night, and her body bore multiple injury marks. The preliminary autopsy report indicated sexual abuse before her murder, leading her father to allege that she was raped and murdered inside the hospital.

Kolkata Police identified and arrested a suspect identified as Sanjay Roy in the case. Roy is an outsider who had easy access to several departments of the hospital due to his role as a civic volunteer in the police welfare board. Sources said that Roy was arrested after his activities were found to be quite suspicious.
