Decomposing human remains were discovered wrapped in a sleeping bag and left on a Manhattan sidewalk for trash collection, according to several media reports. The grisly discovery find occurred around 5 pm on Friday after police received reports of a “suspicious package” emitting a foul odor outside a building in the Kips Bay area.
Upon arrival, officers found the remains inside a sleeping bag that had been placed alongside other garbage bags set out for collection, police stated.
Images and videos shared on social media depict what seems to be a full-sized body encased in a dark sleeping bag, further enclosed in black trash bags.
“It looked like whoever did it made a considerable effort to wrap it up and leave it out in the open,” local resident Ted Oehmke was quoted as telling New York Post.
“I was quite surprised to see it among regular garbage as if sanitation would pick it up,” added Oehmke, who posted a video and photos of officers at the scene on social media.
Oehmke mentioned he thought he saw the top of a head as he passed by.
“I often see people sleeping in this area,” he noted.
“It appeared like it could just be another person on the ground. The people around here often look unwell, so I wasn’t too shocked.”
The police have not disclosed any information about the potential victim, such as age or gender.
The medical examiner’s office is performing an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death and determine if foul play is involved, police said.
