The incident from 1997 revealed Modi’s composed demeanour and strong sense of integrity to his hosts in the US, recalled NRI Hirubhai Patel

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi gets ready to visit the United States of America from September 21-23, Hirubhai Patel, an NRI in the US recalled his 1997 trip, when the BJP leader lost his bag. The incident revealed his composed demeanour and strong sense of integrity to his hosts in the US.

He was the guest for an event of the Vishva Hindu Parishad. After the event, when Modi arrived at his host’s residence, he looked to take out his bag from the car, only to discover that it was missing, perhaps stolen. The bag contained his passport, money, and even his clothes.

Recalling Modi’s composure during the incident, Patel, who was with him, said, “Despite the stressful situation, Narendra Modi remained calm and reassured everyone not to worry, demonstrating his ability to stay composed under pressure.”

Modi spent the next five days at his host’s home, patiently awaiting an arrangement for a passport. Before departing, he humbly requested a loan of some dollars to cover expenses, as his money had also been stolen.

Modi assured them that he would repay the amount to the relatives of his host in India, which he got done immediately within the next few days.
