GURGAON: Students in Class 8 of govt schools in the state can now apply for scholarships. The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) is being implemented across the country by the department of school education and literacy under Union ministry of education. It has already been rolled out in many states.
Asked if launching the programme was a violation of model code of conduct, an official said it’s a centrally sponsored programme, the budget for which is allocated by the Union govt.
Online applications for the scholarship will be accepted till Oct 10. After the application process ends, a written examination will be conducted at the district headquarters between 11am and 2pm on Nov 17.
Students who pass the examination will receive the scholarship from Class 9 to 12. “Students qualifying for the programme will be given an annual scholarship of Rs 12,000. Every month, Rs 1,000 will be deposited into the students’ bank accounts for buying notebooks, pens, school bags, shoes, and other necessary items,” an official of the school education department said. The combined annual income of the applicant’s parents must not exceed Rs 3.5 lakh from all sources, in order to be eligible for the scholarship. Applicants should also have scored a minimum of 55% marks in class 7 (or 50% marks for those from reserved categories).
“The exam will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will have 90 questions, each carrying one mark. The second phase will also have 90 questions of one mark each on social science, mathematics and science,” the official added.
