Giant Infomercial? WWE Hall of Famer SLAMS Saturday Night’s Main Event | WWE News
WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray recently went on record to call Saturday Night’s Main Event 2024, a ‘giant infomercial.’ Ray explained that more than 50% of the show was just promos, ads, and packages. To him, it felt like the wrestling took a backseat to everything else that WWE wanted to achieve through this event.
Let’s take a look at what else Ray said on the topic during his conversation on Busted Open Radio.
Infomercial? Bully Ray Thinks So
“In my eyes, I felt it was like an infomercial. As I watched Saturday Night’s Main Event, I noticed a lot of different aspects of just what was going on in the ring with the wrestling … 54 percent of the show was packages, promos, ads, and all that stuff. They gave the fan just enough. They gave the live audience enough. They gave you at home enough if you were sitting home with your kids—it was a good, friendly show. Here’s who we are, this is what we do, this is the product that we offer, here’s our characters ” (via Busted Open Radio)
Saturday Night’s Main Event Left a Sour Taste in the Fans’ Mouths
Leading up to the event, WWE legend, Jesse Ventura promised that Saturday Night’s Main Event would bring back the retro feel of the original show. WWE made a solid attempt to do so by reintroducing the Winged Eagle title belt. However, they ultimately fell short of the mark and couldn’t figure out how to balance the retro and future elements of the show.
The classic red, blue, and white ropes were a welcome addition, but the lack of a Titantron showed a lack of effort. Also worth noting is the fact that the show lacked promos. In the past, Saturday Night’s Main Event used to start with promos. This was an excellent way to introduce newcomers to the storylines and wrestlers involved.
This year, WWE decided to put the promos on YouTube instead of the actual show. This posed problems for new viewers who couldn’t keep up with what was happening.
Is There Any Truth to Bully Ray’s Criticism of Saturday Night’s Main Event?
While Bully Ray is entitled to his own opinion, Saturday Night’s Main Event was not lacking in quality. Even if the show played like an infomercial at times, WWE did an excellent job with the actual wrestling and generated a lot of buzz with its storyline developments.
We also have to take into consideration that Saturday Night’s Main Event returned after 16 years. Due to this, WWE had no roadmap for approaching SNME in 2024. Now that they’ve tested the waters, we can expect the company to put on an even better show in 2025. If there’s one thing we can be assured of, it is that WWE is not afraid of going to great lengths to evolve and improve its product.
