Wojciech Szczesny, the 34-year-old goalkeeper from Poland, announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday. The announcement comes shortly after his departure from Juventus, the Serie A club, which was a mutual decision.
Despite having one year remaining on his contract with Juventus, Szczesny chose to leave the club. There had been speculation about his potential moves to Monza, another Italian team, and Al-Nassr, a club in the Saudi Pro League, reported Reuters.
Szczesny’s career began at Arsenal in the Premier League before he moved on to play for Brentford and Roma. However, it was during his seven-season stint at Juventus that he achieved significant success, winning the Serie A title three times and the Coppa Italia on three occasions.
Throughout his career, Szczesny represented Poland on the international stage, earning 84 caps for his country.
“I left Warsaw, my hometown, in June of 2006 to join Arsenal with one dream — to make a living out of football,” Szczesny posted on Instagram. “Little did I know it would be a start of a journey of a lifetime.
“Everything that I have and everything that I am I owe to the beautiful game of football.”
