Elon Musk to move headquarters of SpaceX and X from California to Texas
Elon Musk has announced his decision to relocate the headquarters of SpaceX and the social media platform X from California to Texas. In a post on X on Tuesday, Musk revealed his plans to move SpaceX from its current location in California’s Hawthorne to Texas‘s Starbase, while X will be shifted from San Francisco to Austin.
The catalyst for this decision, according to Musk, was a recently enacted law in California, signed by governor Gavin Newsom on Monday, which prohibits school districts from mandating staff to inform parents about changes in their child’s gender identification.Musk referred to this legislation as the “final straw.”
“Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,” he said in a post.

“I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children,” he said in another post.
“And 𝕏 HQ will move to Austin,” Musk said.
This is not the first time Musk has chosen to move one of his companies out of California. In 2021, Tesla, where Musk serves as CEO, relocated its corporate headquarters from California’s Palo Alto to Texas’s Austin.
Additionally, Musk has previously mentioned that he has personally moved his residence from California to Texas, a state that does not impose a personal income tax.
