NEW DELHI: Nearly 70,000 first-year undergraduate students are eagerly preparing to begin their journey at Delhi University colleges. Their first day will be marked by orientation programmes designed to introduce them to the university’s culture, their specific colleges, and the academic expectations ahead.
“I’m excited but also a bit nervous, which I think is completely normal,” shares Debaleena Singha, a student joining Hindu College.”I’m really looking forward to meeting my new friends and professors. College is a new chapter in my life, and I’m excited to dive in.”
At Hindu College, orientation will commence at 10am in Sanganeria Auditorium, followed by department-specific orientations starting at 11am. Regular classes will begin on Friday. “I’ve been preparing for this day for about a week. Over the past few days, I’ve taken time to familiarize myself with the campus layout and key locations. I’ve also researched my academic curriculum and reached out to seniors for advice,” says Singha.
The orientation programmes will provide a comprehensive overview of university life, helping students acclimate to their new environment.
These sessions are designed to address any concerns and set the stage for a successful academic experience. Dinesh Khattar, principal of Kirori Mal College (KMC), said, “We held a comprehensive college orientation a day ahead of the official start to give students a feel for the campus. The event was well-attended, with approximately 1,500 participants, including parents and deans. Now, the departmental orientations will begin”.
As of Wednesday morning, DU has confirmed admissions for at least 70,000 candidates in the second round of allocations, all set to embark on their university journey.
To ensure a smooth transition for these students, the university has implemented a series of measures to prevent any inconvenience.
Khattar adds, “We have been conducting anti-ragging workshops for the past 10 days. Additionally, we have sensitised senior students on the appropriate ways to interact with newcomers on campus.”
In addition to workshops, DU has implemented a comprehensive strategy to combat ragging. One of the key steps taken by the university is the strategic placement of ‘anti-ragging’ posters in both English and Hindi at various locations on campus. Two joint control rooms on North and South campuses have also been set up.
“We are fully prepared to welcome the new students,” said DU proctor Rajni Abbi. “We have deployed a 24X7 police van on campus, known as Vamika, and have police deployment at bus stops and metro stations for anyone who needs help. Additionally, second and third-year students have been counselled to ensure a supportive environment for the freshers.”
Fiza, 17, who has been admitted to the English (Hons) program at Aryabhatta College, is already excited about her new journey. She has already reached out to her classmates and made some new friends. “I’ve been shopping for college and still have a few things to complete. I’m looking forward to a great experience ahead,” she said.
