Former world no. 1 Deepika Kumari will lead the Indian women’s archery team in her fourth Olympic appearance in Paris. She will look to help India win a much-awaited medal in archery, partnering with talented athletes like Bhajan Kaur, Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari. Deepika is heading to this year’s competition on the back of an Asia Cup triumph. The 30-year-old announced her return by securing two gold medals in the Baghdad leg of the Asia Cup. Deepika topped the national selection trials for the Archery World Cup and the Paris Olympics. She, however, failed to excel in the Paris Final Olympic Qualifier and lost in the third round. Deepika finally earned qualification through the team quota.

Deepika Kumari, who was born in a small village near Ranchi, started her journey with a homemade bow and arrows. She joined Jamshedpur’s Tata Archery Academy in 2006 and six years later, she made her debut at the Summer Olympics in London. Deepika has so far won three World Cup silver medals in consecutive years since 2011. She has also secured two Commonwealth Games gold and an Asian Games bronze medal.

Paris Olympics Qualification

Deepika Kumari is a key component of the Indian women’s archery team which will feature at the Summer Olympics after eight years. Despite qualifying via the team quota, Deepika is one of the three archers, who will also compete at individual events. The three-time Olympian will aim to secure her first-ever podium finish this time in Paris.

Recent Performances

Deepika Kumari clinched two gold medals in the first leg of the Asia Cup in Baghdad in February. She beat another Indian Simranjeet Kaur to claim an individual gold. Deepika replicated the success in the recurve team event along with Simranjeet and Bhajan Kaur. She led the side to the bronze-medal match of the Archery World Cup Stage 3 which they lost to Japan.
