James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has officially denied rumours of a video game spin-off based on the 2022 film “The Batman.” The speculation, which originated from a report by Puck on Friday, was quickly shut down by Gunn on social media platform Threads.
“Sadly there is no truth to this whatsoever,” Gunn stated in response to a fan’s inquiry about the supposed game development.
The rumour had gained traction among fans eager for more content set in the gritty Gotham City portrayed in Matt Reeves‘ critically acclaimed film starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. However, Gunn’s statement puts to rest any immediate hopes for a playable expansion of that universe.
While there won’t be a game, “The Batman” franchise is still expanding in other media. A sequel is currently in development, and an HBO limited series focusing on Colin Farrell’s Penguin character is slated for release this fall.
The film itself recently returned to theatres as part of AMC’s celebration of Batman’s 85th anniversary, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the Dark Knight.
Gunn also took the opportunity to dispel another Batman-related rumour circulating on Reddit, saying, “There is also no truth to Tubthumping by Chumbawamba being played on the set of Superman.”
Despite the lack of a tie-in game, Batman remains a prominent figure in the gaming world. Recent titles featuring the character include “Gotham Knights” and “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” though fans haven’t seen a solo Batman game in several years.
