Margao: At an extraordinary gram sabha held at Cavelossim on Sunday, villagers demanded that the panchayat take stringent action against the numerous illegalities occurring at Mobor jetty.
The meeting was specifically convened to address the recent cholera outbreak at the jetty, which has claimed lives and left many workers hospitalised at GMC and Hospicio South Goa District Hospital.
Local MLA Venzy Viegas was present at the gram sabha. Following the meeting, sarpanch Dixon Vaz informed the media that the panchayat will issue the necessary guidelines to trawler owners, who will be required to comply with them within a specified timeframe.
Vaz said the panchayat will prioritise all issues related to sanitation at the jetty and take strict action against any trawler owners found violating the guidelines.
Viegas alleged that the current situation at the jetty was a result of the failure of various govt agencies — including the fisheries department, police, and health department — to monitor and regulate the activities at jetties. As a consequence, he said, the local panchayat has been burdened with the responsibility of ensuring proper sanitation at the jetty.
It is imperative, Vaz said, that all stakeholders including govt agencies, the panchayat, and trawler owners work together to implement sustainable solutions and maintain a safe and hygienic environment at Mobor jetty.
