Batman 2 Update: Colin Farrell Will Return As The Penguin

Director Matt Reeves confirmed the return of Colin Farrell’s character of the Penguin in the upcoming DCU film.
Robert Pattinson starrer The Batman truly came as a reset button for DC’s flagship superhero, following Ben Affleck’s exit from the franchise. Pattinson took on the role of the caped crusader, while Zoe Kravitz appeared as Catwoman and Colin Farrell as the standalone Oswald Cobblepot, aka Penguin. While it might be over four years since The Batman premiered, a sequel was inevitable. Makers had it confirmed that Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne, however, another major update has now come its way.
Colin Farrell will reprise his role as the Penguin, an important figure in Batman’s rogues gallery, for The Batman – Part II. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, director Matt Reeves confirmed Farrell’s return to the film, further revealing that the shooting will begin in early 2025.
The actor couldn’t join the event in person, but he made a video chat during the Saturday presentation for his upcoming crime drama, The Penguin. Notably, this marks the first confirmed casting for the Batman sequel outside of Pattinson. While the filming is due to get underway next, it aims for an October 2, 2026 release. Further details about the casting or the film’s story have been kept a secret till now.
The Penguin Series
Prior to that, fans can catch Farrell’s Penguin in his new series. The events in the show will take place right after the events of the first film, as Penguin seeks to take hold of the Gotham underworld in chaos after the death of Carmine Falcone. One of Carmine’s employees, the ambitious Oz, aka Penguin, is now playing for power in the town’s drug trade.
The eight-episode series will end right where The Batman 2 begins, thus bringing Farrell back into the circle.
Speaking about his character and the show, the actor teased what fans can expect. “Tons of violence, abject darkness, a man, and a great struggle to try and claw his way to the top. You know, there’s a power grab in Gotham now. It’s dark, man. Lauren LeFranc, with her room of writers, wrote eight extraordinary episodes. I mean, just really, really bold stuff. I couldn’t believe that it got as dark as it got… It would be a Hard R,” he told HeyUGuys.
The Penguin will premiere on September 19 on Max.
