AGRA: An Aligarh court sentenced a woman and her lover to life imprisonment for murdering her 5-year-old niece to conceal their illicit affair.
On Aug 25, 2023, Banti Kumar, a resident of Chandaula village, informed the Atrauli police that his young daughter Kumkum had gone missing. She had been playing outside the house when she was last seen. The police swung into action and started investigating the matter.
After examining nearly 100 CCTV cameras, the police found that on the day of the incident, the child had gone with her aunt, Aarti, wife of Sonu Kumar, in the morning and did not return.
Initially, Aarti, 20, tried to mislead the police about the footage showing her with Kumkum and also claimed she did not own a phone.
Later police found a mobile phone at her home which was given to her by Bhanu Prakash alias Kalua, 25, who was from the same village. Aarti admitted to having an illicit relationship with him.
They used the phone to talk in secret. Following this, Kalua was also arrested and he confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The child had caught Aarti having an intimate moment with Bhanu, and Aarti feared that she might inform the family. Therefore, the two of them killed the girl.
First, Aarti strangled her and then bashed her with a brick and buried her in a pile of hay to hide the body. Based on the accused’s statement, the police found the child’s body on Aug 26. The phone’s location was also found at the site of the incident.
Aarti had married Sonu six months ago. Her lover Kalua was also married.
Additional district government counsel Ravikant Sharma said, “Police filed a detailed chargesheet in the court. Earlier, the accused were denied bail by the district court. They went to the high court but there too the bail was rejected. However, the district court was directed to conduct the trial on a daily basis.”
“Considering witness statements and evidence available on record, the court convicted both the accused. It sentenced both of them to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1.05 lakh each on them. Half of the total amount will paid to the victim’s father,” the ADGC said.
